If I were a rich man . . .

If I could afford any car I like it would probably be the TESLA S, an all electric car with a range of 275 miles on a single charge, 5.2 seconds 0-60 mph and top speed of 140mph.

There are three versions and the top car, the P85D, has a 300 miles range and 155 mph top speed.

The car is the brain child of Elon Reeve Musk, a South African-born Canadian American business magnate, investor and inventor. He is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and chairman of SolarCity.

TESLA cars are not available to buy in car showrooms. The company has some retail premises to display the car but to buy one you go online and place the order just as you would a book from Amazon.

There are service centres in some major cities to care for your car and dedicated charging points around the UK.

So I was delighted when I visited Cribbs Causeway north of Bristol this week to go into the showroom on the top floor of the shopping mall and get my first look at this amazing car.

Electric cars are going to change everything about cars – how they work, how the are ‘re-fuelled and services and how they are sold. Electric transport and driver-less cars are set to revolutionise the motoring landscape.
