The Building of my Garden Pond

At last I have built my pond and now just have to trim and tidy.

26 April The top is going to be trimmed with large timbers for seating and this lies on the ground this morIMG_5824ning after cutting and preparing for treatment last evening; it will then by lifted with the help of my good friend Steve, and fixed in place.

This 6′ x 6′  [x 2’6″ deep] pond will have a bubble fountain surrounded by up-lighters that will shine their beams on the bird statue above.IMG_5824a

This brings us almost to the end of the project that started as an idea on paper by Jan, evolved in to  a clear plan with drawings and built barrow load by barrow load and stone by stone over the three years.

27 April and the timber edge is in place, sanded and treated.

30 April – water fountain and electrics ordered
The final step is to install the electrical elements –
– the pump that will deliver a surface bubble will also clean the water and keep it clear of green algae
– three LED lights, managed by dusk/dawn switching will up-light the birds and the birch

1 May – pump and fountain installed
The Hozelock pump installed easily – just had to add the electric plug after threading the cable through the top trim. It has filters and UV to keep the pond clean and fresh at all times.
Our only concern was what sort of ‘spout’ we would get – a bubble seemed preferable.
It came with standard fittings but after trial and error, putting the fountain head beneath the surface of the water we got this lively dancing spout.

6 May – the lights and control have arrived today as well as some sealant to finally trim off.

8 May – in go the electrics.
This is the first installation to gauge the impact made by the three Blagdon lights.
I will now look at final positions and possible using some colour filters ~

~ pity the pic doesn’t show the ripples in the water reflected in the light 0n the birds.

14 May – coloured filters, one lamp in pond blue and the external one lighting the silver birch yellow; they are fantastic, such a beautiful sight as the evening light goes down.

Now just waiting for the roses to give their first year blooms and a final picture can be inserted into this blog piece.
